September 2024, Mayflex, the distributor of Converged IP Solutions, has continued to make enhancements to its sustainability initiatives to benefit both the customers and the environment.
Mayflex is part of the Sonepar Group and is committed to the environment and bringing our carbon emissions to net zero by 2030. As part of Sonepar, every company within the group will be focusing and highlighting the various sustainability initiatives in place during w/c 30th September.
Mayflex currently holds the Ecovadis Silver rating which rates a business’s sustainability based on the following key categories: environmental impact, labour, human rights standards, ethics and procurement practices.
On the 4th of March 2024 Mayflex introduced Autostore from Swisslog, where 14 Maybot robots pick our customer orders from 17,532 bins within the store. As well as being far more energy efficient to run, the main reasons for doing this was to improve the speed and accuracy of our order processing. Since the launch date we have picked just under 40,000 orders with an accuracy of 99.996% with no errors at all in the last 16 weeks from products stored in these locations. In addition, this also allows us to consolidate an increasing number of our customer orders resulting in fewer consignments and deliveries being sent, benefiting both the customers and the environment.
Sam Baldwin, Mayflex Operations & Services Director commented “Circularity is a key focus area for Mayflex and not only have we been re-purposing any cardboard waste to make void filler, but the cardboard also used for the Excel product range is made from FSC recycled materials and the shrinkwrap used is made with reduced plastic content which is 30% recycled material and is 100% recyclable.”
Sam continued “We’ve also been collecting and reusing wooden cable reels, which to date has resulted in a saving of 83 tonnes of CO2 each year. To improve this service further, for our fastest moving SKUs, we are moving to composite plastic reels made of recycled plastic which can be recycled after being used. These reels will be serial number tracked and once a customer has finished with them these will be collected by us and then reused. Once they’ve been used 10 to 12 times those reels will then be ground down and recycled to make other products. With millions of metres of cable being sold and installed each year, the reduction in reels ending up in landfill will be significant.”
“To take circularity one step further we are working with a third-party organisation to take the many wooden crates and wooden reels used, to be repurposed by a charity which helps the long-term unemployed to gain new skills by making furniture out of waste wood which is then sold to the local community.”
Sam concluded “With our Excel brand we were the first cabling manufacturer to remove all single use plastic from our packaging. Since 2019 this has resulted in over 85 million (212 tonnes) single-use plastic bags being removed from the supply chain. Excel customers can now also view a TM65 certificate for each product to show the amount of embodied carbon used throughout the lifecycle of the product. There are also Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) for the core products in the range providing even greater detail on the environmental impact of the products.”
When you work with Mayflex you can rest assured that sustainability is at the heart of what we do.
