RoHS Legal Framework

What is RoHS?

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, originated in the European Union and restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the EU market after July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance.

What are the restricted materials mandated under RoHS?

RoHS directive and the subsequent RoHS 2 (Dir. 2011/65/EU) and RoHS 3 (Directive 2015/863) specify maximum levels for the following 10 restricted materials.

Lead (Pb) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Mercury (Hg) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Cadmium (Cd) and its compounds < 100 ppm (0.01 weight %)
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)

Why is RoHS compliance important?

The restricted materials are hazardous to the environment and pollute landfills, and are dangerous in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling.

How is Mayflex affected by RoHS Directive?

Any business that sells applicable electronic products, sub-assemblies or components directly to EU countries, or sells to resellers, distributors or integrators that in turn sell products to EU countries, is impacted if they utilize any of the restricted materials.

What is REACH and how is it related to RoHS?

REACH is a general regulation and stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, Restriction of Chemicals, and addresses the production and use of chemical substances and their potential impact on human health and the environment. REACH is monitored by the ECHA and deals with 38 chemicals currently. Click here to download our REACH-SCIP compliance declaration.

What is SCIP?

SCIP is the database for information on Substances of Concern In articles as such or in complex objects (Products) established under the European Waste Framework Directive (WFD).
From the 5th January 2021 Companies supplying articles containing substances of very high concern (SVHCs) on the Candidate List in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) on the EU market have to submit information on these articles to ECHA. The SCIP database ensures that the information on articles containing Candidate List substances is available throughout the whole lifecycle of products and materials, including at the waste stage. What is WEEE?

WEEE is the acronym for Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment. WEEE, also known as Directive 2002/96/EC, mandates the treatment, recovery and recycling of electric and electronic equipment. All applicable products in the EU market after August 13, 2006 must pass WEEE compliance and carry the "Wheelie Bin" sticker. For the complete directive, see Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament.

How are RoHS and WEEE related?

WEEE compliance aims to encourage the design of electronic products with environmentally-safe recycling and recovery in mind. RoHS compliance dovetails into WEEE by reducing the amount of hazardous chemicals used in electronics manufacture.Put another way, RoHS regulates the hazardous substances used in electrical and electronic equipment, while WEEE regulates the disposal of this same equipment.

Mayflex RoHS COMPLIANCE DECLARATION

Mayflex Group and its subsidiary companies comply with the EU RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC, 2011/65/EU) and, in some cases, exceed its requirements. The RoHS legal framework aims to minimise the environmental impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment at the end of its life by reducing the legal quantities of six substances that the equipment may contain.

Mayflex Group works closely with all its suppliers and therefore can confirm that all parts/products presently supplied by Mayflex Group meet the requirements of the RoHS Regulation as per Directive 2002/95/EC and subsequent integrations and amendments.

Products sold in the European Union do not currently contain more than specified amounts of restricted substances as per chart below.
Lead (Pb) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Mercury (Hg) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Cadmium (Cd) and its compounds < 100 ppm (0.01 weight %)
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI) and its compounds < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) < 1000 ppm (0.1 weight %)
